How My Music Career Inspired a Calmer Grooming Experience for Dogs

Before dedicating my life to dogs, music had always been a huge part of my life. Singing has been my passion for as long as I can remember, and I’ve always believed in the power of music to comfort, connect and lift the spirit. When I became a professional dog groomer, I never imagined those two worlds would come together.

Before dedicating my life to dogs, music had always been a huge part of my life. Singing has been my passion for as long as I can remember, and I’ve always believed in the power of music to comfort, connect and lift the spirit.

When I became a professional dog groomer, I never imagined those two worlds would come together.

As I naturally sang while grooming, I began noticing something remarkable. Dogs that arrived feeling nervous or unsure would often start to relax. Their bodies softened, their breathing became calmer, and many would begin wagging their tails. Some would even stop to give me kisses or lean into me for cuddles during their groom.

Over time, I realised this wasn’t about putting on a performance—it was about creating an atmosphere where dogs felt safe, loved and understood.

A Different Grooming Experience

For many dogs, visiting a grooming salon can be a stressful experience. They’re in an unfamiliar environment surrounded by new smells, sounds and equipment. Some have had difficult experiences in the past, while others simply find grooming overwhelming.

My goal has always been to change that.

By combining gentle handling, patience, positive reinforcement and my singing, I aim to make every appointment feel less intimidating and more reassuring. Seeing a dog arrive anxious and leave with a wagging tail is one of the greatest rewards of my work.

Many of my regular clients now walk happily into the salon, excited to see me. They greet me with wagging tails, affectionate kisses and genuine enthusiasm, which tells me they associate their grooming appointments with positive experiences rather than fear.

Why I Sing During Grooming

Dogs are incredibly sensitive to our tone of voice and emotions. They may not understand the words we sing, but they can often sense when we are calm, gentle and relaxed.

When I sing during a grooming session, it helps me maintain that peaceful energy, and many dogs appear to respond positively to it. Combined with calm handling and plenty of reassurance, it has become part of the unique experience I offer at Tails of the Heart.

While every dog is different and singing isn’t a proven therapy for all dogs, it has become an important part of how I help many of my canine clients feel more comfortable.

The Benefits of Music

Research suggests that gentle music, particularly classical and slow instrumental music, can help create a calming environment for many dogs.

Music may help to:

  • Encourage relaxation.

  • Reduce signs of stress and anxiety.

  • Create a calmer grooming experience.

  • Help dogs settle in unfamiliar surroundings.

  • Support positive emotional wellbeing.

I believe that when music is paired with kindness, patience and compassionate handling, it can help transform grooming from something a dog simply tolerates into something they can genuinely enjoy.
